The 2008 Evening of Excellence capped an exciting event for the New York City/Long Island Chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry that also included its November Board of Directors Meeting, held at The Venetian Yacht Club, Babylon, N.Y. on November 20, 2008.

The Evening of Excellence, culminating with the Contractor of the Year (CotY) Awards ceremony, is commonly regarded as the premier event of the year throughout the remodeling industry. Held Thursday, November 20, 2008, the event was attended by more than 125 of the industry's elite and was sponsored by Local NARI Members, Riverhead Building Supply. NARI member Picone Stone & Fireplace graciously gifted each attendee with a bottle of wine. Thank you to all for making this evening an event to remember.

Contractors from around the New York City/Long Island area vie for the awards on an annual basis. All projects submitted for judging must be an improvement or an addition to an existing structure in order to be considered. New construction projects are not eligible. In addition, competing projects must have been completed between July 1 of the previous year and October 15 of the current year (a 16-month time period) and cannot have been submitted in prior NARI contests. An impartial panel of judges, who are considered experts within the industry and associated fields, selected winners based on each entrant's "Before and After" photography and project description. Judging was based on problem solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation, degree of difficulty and entry presentation.

25 local CotY winners were named at this year's ceremony. Judging took place at the association's local headquarters in Melville, NY in October. To be considered, a company must be a NARI member in good standing. NARI members represent a select group from the approximately 15,000 companies and individuals in the area identifying themselves as professional remodelers.

Just 15 years ago, remodeling was a $115 billion business. Experts predict that overall remodeling expenditures will exceed $300 billion by year-end 2007; that's an increase of 260% in the last 15 years! It is estimated that more than a 100 million homes per year undergo major renovation or remodeling.
